Lie to Me!

Item: Members of the United Kingdom’s Summer Olympics contingent to sign an affidavit they will not criticize the host’s government as condition of participation.

PHILADELPHIA (BASN/BASN NEWSROOM)-Apparently, the Olympic ideal has been further folded, spindled and mutilated; this time, courtesy of the British government. Simon Clegg, an executive with the British Olympic Association, tried to bogard perspective Olympic team members into signing a contract wherein all team participants would agree to refrain from speaking out on human rights and other politically sensitive issues at the Summer Games in Beijing, China.

But when even the most conservative of British subjects started screaming on him, Clegg backpedaled like Mel Renfro on Bob Hayes. Clegg, who later divulged in a public statement, “it is not our intention or desire to stifle athletes freedom of free speech” now says there was never such a plan in place, and “the final agreement will reflect this.”

Lie To Me!

This coming from the government, who, eleven years after returning Hong Kong to Chinese rule, split just before millions of Chinese were subjected to an epidemic of “bird flu.”

Over 1.2 million chickens, ducks and other fowl were put to sleep as a precautionary measure against this virus that had claimed the lives of six people in Hong Kong in 1997.

While it was reported the root of the problem was traced to filthy conditions in poultry factories, you didn’t have to see the first of the Rush Hour movies to realize Hong Kong’s turnover to total Chinese rule did not sit well with the British. If this flu was as virulent as reported, why didn’t it affect Mainland China’s birds? Could it be that MFN (most favored nation) status also applied to edible fowl in Beijing, at that time?

Olympic Games aside, can you imagine what a major hit this put on the new government — and tourism — in Hong Kong back then? It would be difficult to want to go someplace where you would be afraid to eat. I dunno . . . sounds like, “Hello, Pot? Whassup –This is Kettle, baby.”

Because of the uproar over the British Olympic situation, Belgium, who had also put out a similar gag order, modified theirs to indicate Belgian Olympians could speak – as long as they weren’t in the Olympic Village or other Olympic venues.

German Olympians were reminded to be concerned with clauses contained in the Olympic Charter pertaining to propaganda and political demonstrations.

In Vancouver, the ongoing disgrace that is the Robert Pickton trial has moved on to the next level. Pickton, a pig farmer and serial killer, whose murders of several women in Vancouver’s downtown east side went on without little effort as Vancouver secured a Winter Olympics bid for the 2010 Games on the down low, was charged and convicted of six counts of second degree murder in the first block of 26 linked crimes.

Now the question of trying Pickton on the other 20 first-degree murder charges is up in the air after the Crown Court and defense disagreed in a British Columbia court over whether it should be scheduled while he’s appealing his convictions on the previous six murder counts.

Crown Court seeks to adjourn the matter of setting a date for three or four weeks and then apply to have the second trial after the appeal is completed, according to a statement by prosecutor Melissa Gillespie in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster in January of this year.

Being convicted on the lesser charge of second-degree murder may astonishingly allow Pickton to be out on the streets again while his counsel appeals his convictions on the previously adjudicated murder counts.

And Pickton’s lawyer, Peter Ritchie, said accepting the Crown’s approach could delay said trial by a couple of years.

This evil bastard was convicted in January on lesser charges of second-degree murder in the killing of six women whose remains were found on his Port Coquitlam pig farm.

Apparently the women, even in death, have no value to the Crown Court, as the thought of this muthafucka even having a remote chance to walk the streets while awaiting appeal should turn any human being’s stomach with revulsion.

And those loved ones still alive to recall the horror of how they died are again impeded in their efforts to mourn and move on knowing some karmic balance has been properly addressed.

Justice? Yeah, right. Lie the hell to me.

Meanwhile, back in the States…

Film director Steven Spielberg, under pressure from several humanitarian groups to sever his ties with the Chinese, finally announced his withdrawing from the Summer Games.

According to a recent article in the New York Times, Spielberg, who had signed on as an artistic adviser to the Games, had issues with Chinese president Hu Jintao, who was unsympathetic with Spielberg’s prodding him to end Sudan’s attacks in the Darfur region.

In a prepared statement to the Chinese ambassador and the Beijing Olympic committee, Spielberg said: “Sudan’s government bears the bulk of the responsibility for these ongoing crimes, but the international community, and particularly China, should be doing more to end the continuing human suffering there. China’s economic, military and diplomatic ties to the government of Sudan continue to provide it with the opportunity and obligation to press for change.”

Responding to Mr. Spielberg’s action, a spokesman at the Chinese Embassy in Washington said, “As the Darfur issue is neither an internal issue of China nor is it caused by China, it is completely unreasonable, irresponsible and unfair to link the two as one.”

Separate one from the other? You mean like Germany did in 1936 as they planned to vamp throughout Eastern Europe?

Or perhaps like that racist muthafucka Avery Brundage attempted to do in Mexico City the summer of 1968?

Ohh, baby — lie to me!!!!

The continued stance maintained by China in defending Sudan before the United Nations Security Council was only another interlocking ring into an exercise in sheer malevolence.

In spite of the fact the action on the athletic field won’t be until summer, the battle for the gold, silver and bronze medals in hypocrisy is hot and heavy.

And that’s no lie.

always outnumbered…never outgunned.
