FORMULA ONE: A 2022 RESTART

By Gary Norris Gray, Staff Reporter

The world is currently witnessing another great historical sports accomplishment. We have the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) of football, Jim Brown, we have the GOAT of basketball, Bill Russell, the GOAT of soccer, Pele, the GOAT of hockey, Wayne Gretzky, and the GOAT of baseball, Henry Aaron.

Now a Black 30-year-old from Great Britain will soon become the GOAT of race car driving. Mr. Lewis Hamilton is doing this while the sport continues to become more diverse. Mr. Hamilton is leading the way of being the new face of Formula One.

Sir Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton is the GOAT of Formula One, this year passing the great Michael Schumacher from Germany, numbers don’t lie and Mr. Hamilton continues to posted some impressive numbers.

Last year in one Grand Prix race, Mr. Hamilton after a major penalty at the start of the race went from last place to first in the Sao Paulo Premio Grande- The Brazilian Grand Prix, not many drivers can claim this accomplishment and it sure got my attention. It was amazing to see the #44 Silver Arrow pass 19 cars on the Brazilian course for the victory.

Mr. Hamilton continues to conduct himself with grace and humility unlike other sports stars and fellow drivers who have short tempers, Sabastian Vettel and 2021 champion Max Verstappen have shown this temper over the years, yet these two men hardly ever get punished. Remember these guys are driving a 5,000-pound car over 200 miles per hour on a skinny race track.

Now imagine if Mr. Hamilton acted like former Tampa Bay Buccaneer Antonio Brown or current part-time player Brooklyn Net Kyrie Irving. Road rage on the race track would not be very pretty. Other drivers would be scared to death of the man in the Silver Arrow, Lewis is not like that, and the world should be enjoying this historical run in Formula One.

For some Formula One fans, Mr. Hamilton is the wrong color.

The Formula One 2021 racing season ended in controversy and confusion in the Middle East last November. Astute racing fans now know who is the number one driver in the world. Sir Lewis Hamilton may have lost the 2021 Championship to Max Verstappen but Hamilton will be forever in Black and American history books as he continues to re-write Formula One records.

Hamilton signed a new contract with the Mercedes Benz Racing Team in December so the Lewis train to victory will hopefully continue in 2022.

This year Lewis acquired a new teammate and fellow countrymen George Russell from the Williams Motor Team and loses former teammate Valtteri Bottas who went to the Alfa Romero racing team. Bottas seemed to have been a no-show in the last three races of 2021.

Lewis needed Bottas to block Verstappen in the last race and the #77 Silver Arrow was stuck in the middle of the pack, not giving the assist needed. This event sent Hamilton searching for a new teammate.

Sir Lewis Hamilton showed his class once again, not complaining just working toward the 2022 season, stating he did not want to win his record-breaking 8th championship that way and wanted to win with a clean slate. Hamilton has tied Michael Schumacher with seven world championships.

Not only that he has so many more Formula One records.

GRAND CHELEMS: The triple crown of racing, meaning winning the pole position, having the fastest lap, and a victory all in one race. Hamilton has 6 Schumacher has 5. Lewis trials this statistic by 2 to fellow Englishmen Jim Clark with 8.

RACES WON: If Mr. Hamilton continues on the circuit for five more years, nobody will ever catch his final total. Currently, Lewis has 103 victories and counting to Schumacher’s 91.

PODIUMS: This is when a driver comes in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place in any race. Sir Lewis Hamilton has 182 and counting. Schumacher has 155.

POLES: This is when a driver has the fastest three-day time trials before the race and maintains the number one position on the track at the start of the race. Mr. Hamilton has 103 and counting compared to Schumacher’s 68.

Mr. Hamilton continues the trend for Black athletes being the best at their sports and doing it with class and style. Now with Black History Month on the horizon, Lewis Hamilton’s name will be mentioned.

FORMULA ONE- DIVERSITY

The 2022 Racing grid is the most diverse ever on the racing circuit with new members from Thailand, and China-Mainland. Drivers from (3) Great Britain, (2) Finland, (2) France (2) Germany, (2) Spain, Australia, Canada, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, and Russia make up the rest of the field.

The only question for 2022 is, can Formula One and Sir Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton repeat the great outstanding and competitive racing of 2021? For those hard-core racing fans check out the Ferrari Racing team this year they have a new engine and are under new management and could make a run at the Mercedes Benz and Red Bull teams in 2022.
