NBA BLACK HEAD COACHES 2023

By Gary Norris Gray, Staff Reporter

The National Basketball Association moved into the 8th decade of history. In 1949 no African Americans were on the floor or on the bench, they were not allowed to be there. That has changed drastically in the past 30 years. This year over half of the head coaching positions are Black men leading their teams to a potential championship. The Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers are vying for their 18th title with Black men leading them on the floor. It is noted that this year the NBA signed its 80th African American Head Coach as the league nears the 80-year mark still meaning one Black coach per year.

Question have we improved the NBA hiring practices?, It’s all in the eyes of the beholder as more then half of the head coaching positions are minority-owned in 2023. When owners, vice presidents, presidents, and general managers are people of color too then we are on the right road to progress.

There is an equal number of women owners as minority owners. Ann Walton-Kroenke-Denver Nuggets and Jody Allen-Portland Trail Blazers and Jeanie Buss-Los Angeles Lakers.

So far only Michael Jordan of the Charlotte Hornets, the lone African American, Mark Cuban of the Dallas Mavericks, the lone Latin American, Joseph Tsai Brooklyn Nets, the lone Asian American, with Joe Lacob and Peter Guber-Golden State Warriors representing the LGBTQ- American community.

There have been two Black father-son head coaching teams, Wesley Unseld and Wesley Unseld Jr. of the Washington Bullets/Wizards organization and Bernie Bickerstaff- with five teams and B.J. Bickerstaff of the Memphis Grizzlies and Cleveland Cavaliers.

Currently, there is one head coaching position open as the Milwaukee Bucks start their search for another leader after the release of Mike Budenholzer on May 4th, 2023. The Milwaukee job is not a glamorous or attractive position because of the geographical position, the division, the weather, and the organization at the salary cap limit so there will be very few changes in personal. Center/power forward, Giannis Antetokounmpo has to do it alone AGAIN. More head coaching shoes may fall after the NBA Finals are finished in June.

In this year’s NBA Conference semi-finals, Four African Americans will lead their teams, Darvin Ham-Los Angeles Lakers, Monty Williams– Phoenix Suns, Doc Rivers-Philadelphia 76ers, and Joe Mazzulla-Boston Celtics. Mr. Williams was released by the Suns’ organization after their quick exit from the Denver Nuggets on May 13th. Doc Rivers followed suit after Philadelphia lost to Boston in another game seven.

There have been six African American Head Coaches that have won the Championship. Bill Russell-Boston Celtics, Al Attles-Golden State Warriors, K.C. Jones- Boston Celtics, Doc Rivers Boston Celtics, Lenny Wilkens-Seattle SuperSonics, Tyronn Lue-Cleveland Cavaliers.

It is very interesting to note that Steve Kerr is still with the Golden State Warriors the only head coach in the playoffs with his original team since 2017. Ty Lue now with the Los Angeles Clippers and Doc Rivers now with the Philadelphia 76ers and both push their new teams to the playoffs this year.

The Gray Leopard Cove has gotten so many requests for an updated list of African American head coaches. The last list was posted in 2017.
